The Eastern Soaring League (ESL) has started a HLG division to promote that part of soaring. Various clubs will sponsor 2 day contests somewhere on the East coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bill talks about a 3 servo control option for the Alula flying wing. The normal Alula construction manual is available on the Internet. The modification separates pitch from Roll control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pt. 2 of shear loads on wings. Carbon Fiber skinned boam wingts can handle a great deal of shear when the CF cloth is applied at 45 degree and has strength in both diagonal directions. However such skins can delaminate and buckle. Applying bias cloth over CF caps is advised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two students of Betty Hendersons chemistry class in Bartlesville OK did a science fair project using Eagle Tree System Data Recorder. This made it possible to compare projected vs. theoretical flight performance. A polar was determined for the model. NACA0009 and NACA4409 2M wings were made so wind tunnel data was available. The Kahuna-2M wasnt much of a sailplane for performance but it was plenty good enough to demonstrate the concepts. Seven flights were taken on a January afternoon. The data had some complications but calibrations were done on altitude and airspeed. Parasitic drag seems to have been estimate too low. A 2X increase improved agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airtronics to offer a new 10 channel radio in 6 months which may have switchable frequency selection. Hobico is filling a need for simple and effective frequency scanner selling for $70 w\/ 50 LED lights on its face – available in May. Hobico also will offer a DLG kit for $90. HiTec-mPX is to produce an EPP Foamy 71 Inch scale looking sailplane with electric motor called the Easy Glider. This will be a replacement for club trainers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Ricter Emil Richter and Author hiked up a 3 mile trail to summit of Mt. Pinos (8 831 ft) in Los Padres National Forest. They discussed requirements for Big Slope Flying Inch in remote rough terrain.
1. Broad chord for visibility at high altitude
2. EPP to survive rocky landing zones
3. Tailless to limit parts that could break
4. Light so it could be carried long distances.
The Weasel-pro is too small at 36 Inch span so a straight center section was added to a Weasel wing. The design is still going on to determine best control setup for pitch and roll. Crow seems to work well. A 90 Inch design to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
