Jean Elizabeth Kittle Talbott, 86, a resident of 222 Elm St., Elkins, departed this life early Tuesday evening, Dec. 10, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in her usual health until suffering a fall at her home on Monday and death was unexpected.
She was born Sunday, May 14, 1916, at Belington, a daughter of the late Charles C. Kittle and Lillian Digman Kittle.
She was married to I.D. “Duke” Talbott of Elkins, who survives. They had celebrated 62 years of marriage.
Also surviving are three sons, John C. Talbott, Elkins, I.D. “Duke” Talbott, Jr., Weston, and Mark L. Talbott, Kerens; one daughter, Ellen Elizabeth McCabe of Alpharetta, Ga.
She was preceded in death by one son, Robert C. “Rob” Talbott; and two sisters, Thelma Salisbury of Santa Fe, N.M., and Emma Lou Kincaid of Huntington.
In addition, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Amanda Lake, Ruckersville, Va., Michael Talbott, Elkins, Brian Talbott, Morgantown, Jason Talbott, Tarentum, Pa., Leah Talbott, Santa Cruz Calif., Cristin Gallagher, Ithaca, N.Y., and Sean McCabe, Alpharetta, Ga.; and three great-grandchildren, Christian Lake, Emily Lake and Olivia Lake, all of Ruckersville Va.
Mrs. Talbott was active in numerous church, civic, and community activities. She served for nine years as a member of the West Virginia Commission on Aging, was a former president of the Democratic Woman\u2019s Club, was a former president of the Randolph County Domestic Training and Referral Program, the Randolph County Garden Club, the Randolph County CEOs, and the Randolph County Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors.
She was vice president, chairman of readers, and coordinator of Region 3 for the West Virginia Heritage Quilt Search which, with Ohio University Press, published the book, “West Virginia Quilts and Quiltmakers: Echoes from the Hills,” edited by Fawn Valentine.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins and served as Sunday school teacher, chair of the Board of Christian Education, deacon, trustee, and president of the American Baptist Women. She was also involved for many years with the West Virginia Baptist Women serving in a variety of leadership roles.
She was a member of the Randolph County Creative Arts Council, Log Cabin Quilters\u2019 Guild, National Quilters Association, American Quilt Society, Woman\u2019s Club of Elkins, National Association of Parliamentarians, West Virginia Association of Parliamentarians, and was a former President of the Rose G. Martin Unit of NAP.
For seven years Mrs. Talbott served as executive secretary of the Mountain State Forest Festival Association. She attended Davis & Elkins College and Marshall University.
Friends will be received at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. On Saturday morning, Mrs. Talbott will be moved to the First Baptist Church, where final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.
