KINSTON – Mary Arlene Wamsley Mallard, age 81, Kinston N.C., died Monday, July 11, 2011. Mrs. Mallard was born November 20, 1929, in Mill Creek, West Virginia to the late Mrs. Mary Belle Pingley Wamsley and the late Genus Wamsley. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Leo C. Mallard Jr.; brothers Robert Wilson Wamsley and Ernest Eugene Wamsley; and sister, Virginia Ruth (Dolly) Wamsley. Mrs. Mallard attended Tygarts Valley High School graduating in the class of 1947; and was a member of the National Honor Society. After high school, Mary met Leo, her husband to be, on a roller skating blind date. They fell in love, married soon thereafter, and traveled the United States as an Air Force couple. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and homemaker. Mary had exceptional skills as a seamstress and a baker; she had a quick wit, bright flashing brown eyes, and a loving smile. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Ladies Circle #3, and American Legion Auxiliary Unit #43. Mary is survived by daughters, Arlene Mallard Anderson and husband James Michael, of Statesville, N.C., Pamela Mallard Williams and husband David Richard, of Kinston, N.C., Barbara Mallard Holmes and husband Hayes Barber, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Carol Ann Mallard Walters and husband Hugh Gary, of Kinston, N.C.; grandchildren David Richard Williams Jr. and wife Tamara Reed, Stephanie Anderson Bass, Paul Clinton Williams and wife Amanda Walrath, James Michael Anderson Jr. and wife Ashley Templeton, Amanda Carol Walters, and Cole Andrew Walters; and great-grandchildren, Joseph Elliott Bass, Anderson Clinton Bass, Addison Victoria Bass, and Isabella Danielle Anderson; brothers Charles Denver Wamsley and wife Gatha, Willard Glen Wamsley and wife Ruth; nephews Charlie Wamsley, Randy Wamsley, and Kenneth Doster; and nieces, Patrice Wamsley, Amy Wamsley Taylor and Audrey Gail Sweeney. The family wishes to thank Dr. Khalil Abulatifa, Dr. Stephen Irvin, Dr. Gary Heck, Dr. Alan Kirollos, and Dr. Robert Gallaher and the third floor nursing staff at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Care givers who became good friends to Mary and provided loving care and companionship include Wendy, Debbie, Bonnie, Sharon, Ginger, Glenda, Melissa, and Sonya. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011, at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville, N.C. A celebration of life service will be at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church, 2101 North Heritage Street, Kinston with Pastor Wanda Neely, D. Min. officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Air Force Sergeants Association, American Legion Auxiliary, First Presbyterian Church, 2101 N. Heritage Street, Kinston, NC 28501 or a Veteran’s Home of one’s choice. Arrangements are by the Howard-Carter Funeral Home, Kinston, N.C. (Paid obituary)
