Elder Lynn Elden Muhlestein 1942-2020 Obituary
Elder Lynn Elden Muhlestein, 78, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at home. Although he had been in declining health, death was unexpected.
Lynn was born on Sunday, March 15, 1942, in Salem, Utah, a son of the late Roy Casper Muhlestein and Zelda Nellie Lewis Muhlestein.
On March 5, 1966, in Elkins, he was married to the former Linda Louise Phillips, who survives.
Also left to cherish Lynn’s memory are three children, Cresta Simmons of Columbus, Ohio, Ginger Elmore and husband, Rodney, and Gary Muhlestein and companion, Teresa Merico, all of Elkins; four brothers, Wayne Muhlestein and wife, Linda, of Glacier Lake, Montana, Lewis Muhlestein and wife, Janice, of Columbus, Ohio, Glen Muhlestein and wife, Kathleen, of Salem, Utah, and Allen Muhlestein and wife, Pat, of Jordan, Utah; six grandchildren, Kimber, Markie, Cory, Chelsea, Zack and Gabe; 10 great-grandchildren, Carlie, Caroline, Payton, Hunter, Jake, Luke, Tanner, McKenna, Sawyer and Brayden; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Lynn in death besides his parents was one sister, Nyla Jensen; one infant brother, Reed Muhlestein; and a son-in-law, Mark Simmons.
Lynn grew up in Utah with a brief exception for when his family had moved to Hawaii. While there, he helped his family on a labor mission as they worked to build the Church College of Hawaii in Laie, Hawaii, which is now BYU-hawaii.
He was a graduate of Orem High School in Orem, Utah, and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1962-1964.
He had served with both the United States Army and the United States Navy and on the Apollo 8 rescue mission.
As an adult, Lynn made West Virginia his home with his wife and three children. However, he kept his Utah home alive through stories and visits as often as possible. He had worked as a carpenter for Waretop Enterprises, Ken Auvil Homes Inc. and as a self-employed carpenter. He also had worked for Elkins Builders Supply.
He loved construction, having built many of the homes in Riverview, reconstructing the sanctuary in the First Baptist Church, and completing many remodeling jobs for people in and around Elkins.
He enjoyed hiking and caving, and he was a Boy Scout leader for several years. Frequently exploring and introducing his family to as many new adventures as possible, Lynn stayed active and always kept a youthful spirit. He had acted in different plays at the Gandy Dancer Theater
He was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post No. 29, American Legion and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A visitation will be held at Randolph Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Elder Bruce Hedrick will conduct the service and interment will follow in the American Legions Little Arlington Cemetery at Cravensdale, where members of the H.W. Daniels Post No. 29, American Legion, Tygarts Valley Post No. 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and West Virginia Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
