Billy Hewitt Sr 1929-2010 Obituary

Billy Hewitt, Sr., 81, of Elkins, WV entered into eternal rest Sunday March 28, 2010 at Nella’s Nursing Home in Crystal Springs, WV where he had been a resident for the past two years. He was born Saturday January 12, 1929 in Philippi, WV, a son of the late Birdsell and Virginia Foy Hewitt. Billy was a 1947 graduate of Elkins High School in Elkins, WV. After graduation he entered the US Navy on Thursday July 8, 1948 where he served during the Korean Conflict. He received the United Nations Service Medal as well as the Korean Service Medal. He was honorably discharged Thursday July 9, 1953. While serving in the Navy, he married Virginia Mullenex on Friday March 2, 1951 at St. John’s Methodist Church in Parsons, WV. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator in the construction field for several years. Billy was Methodist by faith. He and Virginia resided in Florida for several years before returning home to WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Maurice Hewitt and Victor Hewitt and one sister: Geraldine Swecker. Billy will be sadly missed by his wife of 59 years: Virginia M. Hewitt of Elkins, WV; one son: Billy Hewitt, Jr. and wife Kathryn of Morgantown, WV; one daughter: Sherry Cutright and husband Randall of Lexington, KY; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In keeping with Billy’s wishes he will be cremated. The family will have a private family prayer vigil for Billy at the family residence located at 117 Evans Drive in Elkins, WV. Graveside services will be held at Mt. State Memorial Gardens in Gilman, WV at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any charity of your choice.
