Mr. Richard Lynn Shaffer, age 70 years, a resident of Elkins, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2011 in the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born January 31, 1941 at Valley Head, a son of Hazel Vandevender Shaffer of Elkins and the late Ralph Forest Shaffer.

Also surviving are one sister, Phyllis Swecker and husband Ronald P. Swecker of Leesburg, GA., two nephews, Jeffrey L. Swecker, Benton, KY and Mitchell L. Swecker of Leesburg, GA. Three aunts, Gloria Vandevender, Elkins, Irene Shaffer, Beverly and Mary Jackson of Elkins and several cousins also survive.

Also preceding him in death were his beloved brother, Gary Lee Shaffer and a sister, Marilyn Francis Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer was a graduate of Tygart Valley High School with the Class of 1958.

He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in Viet Nam and was employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways prior to his retirement.

Friends may call from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday, May 20. 2011 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.

On Saturday, May 21st he will be moved to the Maplewood Cemetery where a graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM with Pastor Terry Burgess officiating.

Presentation of the American Flag will be made by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and interment will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Randolph County Cancer Support Group, P. O. Box 2361, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Mr. Shaffer.

The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Richard Lynn Shaffer.
