Ada Pearl “Granny” Swisher Williams, 85, a resident of Parsons, departed this life early Wednesday morning, Aug. 6, 2003, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mabel and Scott Hovatter. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to heart and respiratory failure.

She was born Feb. 13, 1918, at Bretz in Preston County, a daughter of the late Clarence Swisher and Lillian Roach Swisher.

In 1934, she was married to Cecil Williams, who preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1979.

Surviving are two sons, Dorsey Williams and wife, Margaret, of Pifer Mountain, and Robert Williams and wife, Georgia, of Elkins; three daughters, Mabel Hovatter and husband, Scott, Rickie Nestor and husband, Ralph, all of St. George, and Thelma Williams and husband, Don, of Pelham, Ala.; two brothers, Harold Swisher and wife, Madelyn, of Grafton, and Woodrow Swisher of Thornton; seven granddaughters, Ruby Kelly, Teresa Smith, Lisa Stevens, Tammy Fusco, Judy Carpenter, B.J. and Cindy Williams; two grandsons, Donald Williams and Ricky Nestor; and 15 great-grandchildren, Luke Stevens, Melissa Kelly, Randy Kelly, Erika, Kimberly and Devin Smith, Bethany and Zach Williams, Elizabeth and Tony Fusco, Dale, Scotty and Chad Carpenter, and Scottie and Heather Williams.

She is preceded in death by one grandson, Dorsey WIlliams Jr.; three brothers, Harold, Bill and Russell Swisher; and one infant sister.

She worked for several years at a canning factory in Grafton and was a homemaker. She loved to can, cook and bake and was a loving mother. She baby-sat for several children and loved each one of them. They became her family and they knew her as “Granny.” She was a former member of the Church of the Brethren and enjoyed her visits from Pastor Robert Leard and Pastor James Ellis.

The family will receive friends at the Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the Funeral Home Parlor on Saturday at 1 p.m. Pastor Robert Leard and Pastor James Ellis will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of donations to Hospice Care Corp., PO Box 193, Parsons, W.Va. 26287. The Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Ada Pearl “Granny” Swisher Williams.
