Alberta Pauline Shaffer, 81, of 201 Beacon St., Belington, died at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at her home. She had been in declining health for quite some time.

Mrs. Shaffer was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Mt. Claire, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Ina Louise Myers Williams.

On Dec. 11, 1935, she married Denver C. “Pete” Shaffer, who preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1975.

Surviving are two sons, James H. Shaffer and Leonard M. Shaffer and wife, Mary, all of Philippi; three daughters, Betty L. Harris and husband, Ted, Belington, Margie Mortensen and husband, Marvin, Gowrie, Iowa, and Linda Underwood and husband, Oakey, Cincinnati, Ohio; 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by a daughter, Ramona Brown; two brothers, Robert and Arden Williams; and two sisters, Beulah Mick and Irene Keller.

Mrs. Shaffer attended the schools of Rosemont and Flemington. She was a homemaker and a former cook at Pt. Pleasant School and Philip Barbour High School and a former cook in area restaurants. She was a lifelong member of the VFW Laurel Mountain Post 410 Ladies Auxiliary in Belington. She was a member of Tyhannon Sportsman Club and a member of Valley Bend Baptist Church near Belington.

Funeral Arrangements: Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, with the Rev. Leon Brown and Pastor Mike Bond officiating. At 7 p.m. Thursday, a memorial service will be conducted by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Interment will follow in Clemtown Cemetery.
