Archie Darius Hawkins, 89, of HC 78, Rock Cave, Holly Grove community, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

He was born Feb. 8, 1913, at Holly Grove, a son of the late Abe and Arzella Ogden Hawkins.

He was united in marriage on Sept. 21, 1940, to Ruth Gillum Hawkins, who preceded him in death in 1989.

He is survived by four daughters, Thelma Woody and husband, Carl, of Rock Cave, Mamie Carpenter and husband, Otto, of French Creek, Charlotte Leichliter and husband, Gary, of French Creek, and Mavis Shiflett and husband, Jim, of Buckhannon; two sons, Joseph Hawkins and wife, Sharon, of French Creek, and Dale Hawkins and wife, Wanda, of French Creek; nine grandsons, Steve Carpenter, Danney Carpenter, Neil Hawkins, Terry Hawkins, Bradley Hawkins, Gary Leichliter, Paul Leichliter, Craig Woody and Kevin Shiflett; seven granddaughters, Debra Speaker, Kim Fogle, Karen Hawkins, Amy Tenney, Brenda Hawkins, Tina Hawkins and Lora Bryant; 14 great-grandchildren and three foster great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Voris Hawkins, Oral Hawkins and twin brother, Artie Hawkins; and one sister, Pearl Shaw. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Hawkins was a Methodist by faith. He liked gardening and working on his farm and remembering the times he worked in the oil and gas fields. He enjoyed his family and especially his great-grandchildren running around his house.

Friends will be received today from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Dale United Methodist Church with Pastor David Jessie and Pastor Holly Hoover officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Dale Cemetery.
