Basil R. Heavner, 90, of Route 1, French Creek, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at Dean’s Personal Care Home.

He was born May 18, 1913, in Upshur County, the son of the late Ira Raymond and Edna Elizabeth Tolliver Heavner.

He was united in marriage in 1932 to Pauline Hyre Heavner, who preceded him in death on Jan. 6, 1989.

He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Donice Lee Heavner.

He is survived by one daughter, Joann Beer, widow of Zane Beer, of Route 1, French Creek; three granddaughters, Mrs. Larry (Luanne) Bowers of Scott Depot, Mrs. Thomas (Glenna) Weaver III of Chilicothe, Ohio, and Mrs. David (Ramona) Lacko of Albright; three great-granddaughters, Mrs. David (Laura) May of Lexington, Ky., Mrs. Jeremy (Carol) Brickey of Grayson, Ky., and Amy Weaver of Morehead, Ky; two great-grandsons, Zane and David Lacko, both of Albright; two brothers, Fay Heavner and wife, Betty, of Ireland and Thomas Heavner and wife, Jean, of Diamond, Ohio; four sisters, Juanita Newsome of Buckhannon, Avis Brimlow of Alliance, Ohio, Garnett Roberts of California, and Cletis Marsh of Akron, Ohio; one stepsister, Shirley Rogers of Buckhannon; and devoted caregivers, Mike and Kelli Dean.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Robert and Burton Heavner; and three sisters, Genevieve Rexroad, Mildred Gregory and Lolita Heavner.

Mr. Heavner was a longtime general contractor in Upshur and surrounding counties. His business included trucking, producing crushed stone, paving roads and driveways as well as service and sales of heavy equipment.

He was a longtime member of the West Virginia Motor Truck Association and the West Virginia Contractors Association.

Mr. Heavner served on the Upshur County Board of Education for 14 1/2 years and also on the Upshur County Youth Camp board of directors for 17 years and was an emeritus member.

He also served on the Beechtown Cemetery Association board of directors and was an honorary member. He was also a charter member of the Central Upshur Lions Club.

Friends will be received at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in Buckhannon Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Upshur County Youth Camp, in care of Thanna Wentz, Route 6, Box 629, Buckhannon, W.Va. 26201. The Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
