OBITUARY: BERTSELL LEROY CATHELL JR. Bertsell Leroy Cathell Jr., 65, of Philippi, died Tuesday morning, May 31, in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness. He was born January 22, 1946, at Philippi, a son of the late Bertsell L. Cathell Sr., the late Mae Gertrude (Shaffer) Cathell McVicker and the late Ray E. McVicker. He was twice married, first to the former JoEllen Skidmore, who survives at Belington and on August 31, 1979, he married the former Rosemarie Tenney, who survives at Philippi. Also surviving are three daughters, Pamela Holbert, Belington, Cheryl Anglin and husband, Ted, Philippi, Amanda Cathell, at home; two sons, David Cathell and wife, Cindy, Douglasville, GA, Paul Cathell and wife, Keara, Philippi; one sister, June Lee Watson and husband, Herman, Streetsboro, OH; fifteen grandchildren, Chelsea and Courtney Holbert, Samantha Sparks, Teddy and Christopher Anglin, David, Sabrina and Braidyn Cathell, Sjana and Dakota Benton, Bridgette, Natalie, Arianna and Makinley Cathell and Alexander Hinebaugh; one great grandchild, Izabella Martinez. Mr. Cathell attended the schools of Barbour County and was a graduate of Philip Barbour High School. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, serving with the U. S. Army. He was a member of the Army Reserve for approximately eight years and was a former member of the State Color Guard. He was a life member of Laurel Mountain Post #410, V.F.W. and had served as Junior Vice Commander. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed computer games and collecting anything to do with Santa Claus. He was a former timberman and mill hand in the lumber industry. He attended the Light of Christ Chapel in Belington. Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 P.M. on Friday, June 3, at the Light of Christ Chapel, Crim Avenue, Belington. The Rev. Jimmie Tallman will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. on Friday. Following services, Mr. Cathell’s request for cremation will be honored. Mr. Cathell’s medical conditions made it difficult to be in the presence of flowers and it was his request that rather than sending floral tributes, donations be made to the sender’s church, a charity of choice or to his family. Stemple & Forman Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
