Mrs. Betty Irene Wilt Kittle Fortney, 73, a resident of Wabash Avenue, Belington departed this life Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2012, at her residence, following an extended illness.

She was born Nov. 15, 1939, at Galloway, a daughter of the late Harry R. Sr. and Flossie Mae Powers Wilt.

She was twice married, first on July 20, 1962, to Cecil W. Kittle Jr., who preceded her in death Nov. 17, 1965 in the Vietnam War. On June 5, 1970 she married Larry Earl Fortney, who preceded her in death March 18, 2006, at his home with his wife of 35 years by his side.

She is survived by four sons, Rick Kittle and wife, Jamie, of Sully, Randy Kittle of Belington, Larry “Joe” Fortney and wife, Kathy, of Belington and Lynn and wife, Lisa Fortney, of Belington. Also surviving are one sister, Susie Stalnaker and husband, Dave, of Elkins; one brother, Harry Richard Wilt Jr. and wife, Geraldine, of South Carolina; two granddaughters, Heather Kittle of Elkins and Alexis Fortney of Belington; one grandson, Jalen Fortney of Belington; several nieces and nephews; her special nephew, Larry Phillips; and her best friend, Sue Phillips.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Flanagan, Mary Ann Ketchem and infant Wilma Jean Wilt; and two brothers Paul Wilt and infant Roger Wilt.

Mrs. Fortney attended the schools of Barbour County. She worked several years in restaurants in Randolph and Barbour counties. She also worked as an EMT and driver for Belington Emergency Squad for several years. She later stayed with elderly people in Elkins taking care of them before she retired. She loved camping and fishing and was a Protestant by faith.

Friends will be received from Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 6 to 9 p.m. today and again Friday from 8 until 11 a.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Kelly Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
