Betty June Phares, a native and long-time resident of Elkins, died Thursday, July 25, 2002 in Mesa Ariz., after a two-year battle with cancer.

Mrs. Phares was the daughter of the late John and Lena Kittle of South Elkins, and the wife of the late Wilson J. Phares of Gilman.

She is survived by three daughters, Kathy Farris and husband, Randell, Lois Phares and Rose Keen; eight grandchildren, Chandra and Christopher Farris, Jenifer, Danielle and Brandon Phares and Tierra , Dasha and Martia Keen; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School. She painted planes and volunteered at the Lane Stanford Hospital in California during World War II, before returning to work at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia. After the war, she resumed her primary career as a homemaker in Portsmouth and Norfolk, Va., where she was active in church and the PTA. She returned to Elkins in the early 1980s.

A memorial service will be held for Mrs. Phares on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Woodford Memorial Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Canfield Family Cemetery on Lower Cheat. It is suggested that donations of sympathy may be sent in Mrs. Phares’ name to BSA Troop 853 Scholarship Fund, 7646 S. Willow Drive, Tempe, Ariz. 85283. Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
