Catherine I. Shaffer Armstrong, 83, a resident of Parsons and more recently a resident of Colonial Place in Elkins, peacefully passed from this life to the next Tuesday morning, July 22, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born Dec. 23, 1919, at Bayard, a daughter of the late Claude G. Shaffer and Wavie Arnold Shaffer.

On Dec. 24, 1940, at Oakland, Md., she was married to Richard H. “Dick” Armstrong, who preceded her in death on March 18, 1988.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Evick and husband, William, and Susan Carr and Lee DeMoss, all of Parsons; five grandchildren, Richard K. “Rick” Sturms, Debra Fike and husband, Gene, Lori Mullenax and husband, Randy, and David Evick, all of Parsons, and Dr. Marciea Evick of Elkins; five great-grandchildren, Tyler and Justin Fike, and Evan, Josie and Cameron Mullenax; one brother-in-law, Burton “Sonny” Armstrong and wife, Judy of Valley Head; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Brenda Sturms and husband, Ronald; one brother, Thomas Shaffer; and three sisters, Rita Williams, Atha Bohon and Glenna Gribble. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She attended the schools of Tucker County and was a graduate of Parsons High School class of 1937. In 1963, she and her late husband founded the R.H. Armstrong Contracting and Paving Corp., where she served as secretary and stockholder for many years. She was very instrumental in its growth and success.

The family will receive friends at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home today from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Friday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate and interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows. The Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Catherine I. Shaffer Armstrong.
