DALE DEAN CHIPPS, SR., age 92 years, a resident of Kerens, WV departed this life early Sunday morning, February 3, 2013 at the Princeton Community Hospital at Princeton, WV.

He had been in declining health for the past three months.

He was born Thursday, December 30, 1920 at Elkins, WV a son of the late Clinton B. and Mabel Dean Chipps. On November 1, 1941, he was married to the former Mildred Louise Poling, who preceded him in death October 12, 2006.

They had celebrated sixty-four years of marriage. Surviving are two sons, Dale Dean Chipps, Jr., Fort Myers, FL; Thomas S. Chipps and wife Jane Rothlisberger Chipps, Beckley; five grandchildren, Lory Chipps Dillon and husband Tyler, Ft. Myers, FL; Matthew Dean Chipps, Bridgeport; Jason Thomas Chipps and wife Katherine, Charleston; Ashley Jane Chipps; and Joshua Hunter Chipps, both of Beckley; and five great grandchildren, Braden Thomas Chipps; Ella Grace Chipps; Hannah Marie Dillon; Tyler Dillon, III; and Jack Dillon.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death are one sister, Pauline Arles Harsh; and two granddaughters, Carey Elizabeth Chipps; and Kelly Suzanne Chipps.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1939 and was a Veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving during World War II, from 1942 to 1945, being a part of the Normandy Invasion, the Casablanca Invasion and served on the Atlantic Fleet Flag Ship that carried President Truman. He was an employee of the WV Department of Highways with thirty-five years of service, retiring as the Supervisor of the District 8 Material Testing Laboratory. He was a member of the former Kerens Lodge # 183, IOOF, was a member of the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion, the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Elkins Lodge # 108, A. F. & A. M. where he was a 32 degree Mason and the former Harts Chapel Methodist Church at Kerens.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Thursday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Friday, February 8, 2013 at 1 PM. The Rev. Kevin Gainer will officiate and interment will follow at the Israel Cemetery at Kerens, WV, where the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion, the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the United States Navy will conduct full military honors. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Israel Church Cemetery Fund, Route # 2, Box 304-b, Elkins, WV 26241.
