Dellis James Rowan, 88, a resident of Mabie, departed this life Friday evening, Jan. 1, 2021, at Davis Medical Center in Elkins, with his loving family by his side. He had been in declining health for the past six months.

He was born Sunday, May 15, 1932, in Mabie, a son of the late Eslie and Minerva Fox Rowan. He was twice married. First, he was married to the former Geraldine Virginia Knick, the mother of his children, who preceded him in death in 2002. Second, he was married to the former Nancy Mae Hile, who preceded him in death in 2018.

Surviving are two sons, James Rowan and wife, Sherri, of Winfield and John Rowan and wife, Valerie, of Beverly; one stepdaughter, Jamie Nestor and husband, Rocky, of Parsons; two brothers, Donald Rowan and wife, Wilma, of Conneautville, Pennsylvania, and the Rev. Darwood Wick Rowan and wife, Marie, of Petersburg, Virginia; three sisters, Mildred Auvil of Lorain, Ohio, Mary Cross and companion, French Taylor, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Bonnie Shuck of Akron, Ohio; five grandsons, Kane Rowan, Logan Rowan, Hunter Rowan, Blake Rowan and Braxton Rowan; three granddaughters, Maddi Rowan, Jasmine Shreve and Gracey Rowan; two stepgrandsons, Eli Nestor and Rory Nestor; three stepgranddaughters, Leslie Nestor, Zoie Nestor and Candace Nestor.

Preceding him in death are three brothers, Dorsey Rowan, Darrell “Buck” Rowan and Delmas Butch Rowan; and two sisters, Juanita Jean Collett Moore and Rosie Bliemeister.

He attended the schools of Randolph County, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He retired in 1992 as a foreman for the West Virginia Division of Highways with over 20 years of service. He was a member of the West Virginia Draft Horse and Mule Association. He was a Methodist by faith. He dearly loved his family, his grandchildren and his horses.

A graveside service will be conducted at the Lower Rowan Cemetery at Mabie, on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Randy Long will officiate and interment will follow.

As we follow the CDC guidelines, masks and social distancing will be required.
