Dempsey W. Arbogast, 81, a resident of the Gateway Apartments, passed away Tuesday evening, April 1, 2003, in the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Clarksburg.

He was born March 29, 1922, at Circleville, a son of the late Samuel William and Mona Bennett Arbogast.

He was formerly married to Daisy Helmick, who survives in Elkins.

He is also survived by five sons, Willard Arbogast of Elkins, Kenneth Arbogast of Clarksville, Md., Ronald Arbogast of Montrose, Glen Arbogast of Davis, and Kevin Arbogast of St. George; three daughters, Mrs. Woodrow (Wanda) Smith of Valley Head, Mrs. Robert (Wilda Connie) Pratt of Elkins, Mrs. Lonnie (Norma) Daniels of Huttonsville; one stepson, Fred Bennett of Kerens. Also surviving is one brother, June Arbogast of Winchester, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Emmaline Cave of Virginia, Mrs. Earl (Ruby) Bonnell of Glady, and Mrs. Ada Nelson of Elkins; 24 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, Jesse, Keith and Weldon Arbogast, and one sister, Bonnie McClure, preceded him in death.

Mr. Arbogast was a graduate of Circleville High School. He served as a medic assistant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Okinawa, Philippines and Japan. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a retired machine operator with Elkins Industries. He was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post No. 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elkins Moose Club and Fraternal Order of the Eagles of Elkins.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Eugene Nestor, the Rev. Carol Nestor and Pastor Terry Burgess officiating. Interment will follow at the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite by members of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Dempsey W. Arbogast.
