Derris A. Badgett, 55, a resident of the Beverly Mobile Home Park in Beverly, passed away at 10:25 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at his residence. He had been in usual health and death was sudden and unexpected.

Born Sept. 16, 1948, in Fairmont, he was the son of the late Avin Badgett and the late Virginia Della Weese Badgett Armstrong.

Derris is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Della Martin and husband Mike of Pennsylvania; one sister, Penny Kay Kalenak of Aliquippa, Pa.; several half-sisters and five brothers, Tom Badgett of Elkins, Alvin Badgett of Mill Creek, Harrison Pennington and Carman Pennington, both of Elkins, and Frank Pennington of Valley Bend.

Also surviving are a grandson, Andrew Roy Reed, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Preceding him in death besides his parents were three brothers, Dan Pennington, David Jacob and Denny Fawley.

Derris was formerly employed by Burns Motor Freight as a truck driver. He attended the schools of Randolph County and was a former member of the Moose Lodge. He collected eagles and did a lot of wood carvings. Derris also liked to fish and loved talking to his family on the phone. He was a Protestant by faith.

He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home. The H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion will make the presentation of the American flag. At the request of the deceased, the remains will be cremated.

The F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Derris A. Badgett.
