OBITUARY: Derwitt Wesley Smith Derwitt Wesley Smith, 86, of Criders, Va., died Friday, April 5, 2013, in the Grafton City Hospital, Grafton, W.Va. He was born July 17, 1926, at Criders, a son of the late Dewey Solomon and Iva Elton (Dove) Smith. In October 1946, he married the former Arlene Georgia Fink, who preceded him in death on December 6, 2010. Surviving are two daughters, Judy Kay Miller and husband, Charles, Moatsville, with whom he had been residing, Marion Renee Shuler and friend Rodney, Fountain, Fla; one son, Terry Rex Smith and wife Joyce, Port Republic, Va., five grandchildren, Aaron Miller and wife Patricia, Windsor, Colo., Kent Miller and wife, Vicki, Raleigh, N.C., Adrienne Dunfee and husband, Tim, Bishop, Calif., Terry Strength and husband, Jeremy and Chance Shuler, all of Bristol, Fla., seven great grandchildren, Samira and Lucas Miller, Davis Miller, Ryan, Trent, and Jordan Dunfee and Jayla Renee Strength; one brother, Dean Smith and wife, Kay, near Harrisonburg, Va.; two sisters, Juanita Kiser and husband Lee, Harrisonburg and Elaine Lantz, Bergton, Va. He was also preceded in death by one son, Derwitt Mark Smith and by two sisters, Ruby Caplinger and Leona Canoles. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II, serving in the pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. He was a life-long farmer and was a retired long-haul trucker. He had formerly worked for Walker Manufacturing. He was a licensed pilot and an avid flyer. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Interment will be held in Virginia, at a later date. The family wished to acknowledge the loving care given to Mr. Smith by the staffs of the Wallace B. Murphy Nursing Care Facility, the Grafton City Hospital and Hospice Care Corp. Stemple and Forman Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
