Dixie Lee Shreve, age 82, of St. Albans, WV died, Saturday September 28th, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, WV. He was born July 7th, 1931 in Buckhannon, WV, a son of the late Enoch and Edna Miles Shreve. On August 9th he married Marion Madeline Balli at Buckwheat Church near Pickens WV, who preceded him in death on March 28th 2007. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Enoch Shreve Jr. He is survived by two sons, Timothy Shreve and wife Debra of Broken Arrow, OK and Daniel Shreve of Charleston, WV; two daughters, Lois Shreve of St. Albans, WV and Ruth Durr and husband James of Anchorage, AK; seven grandsons, Erik Shreve and wife Jill of Dallas TX, Nathan Shreve and wife Alice of Auburn, CA, Christopher Shreve and wife Emily of Melissa TX, Garrett Shreve and wife Ashton of Charleston, Matthew Handley of Bozeman, MT, and Franklin and Brian Durr of Anchorage AK; four granddaughters, Tracy Shreve Bellew and husband Josh of Broken Arrow, Sarah Handley of Boston MA, Rebecca Handley of Hickory, NC and Hannah Shreve of Morgantown, WV; three great granddaughters, Hanako and Moriko Shreve both of Auburn, CA and Aiyana Bellew of Broken Arrow; one great grandson Mason Shreve of Melissa, TX; two brothers Eugene P. and Calvin M. Shreve both of Buckhannon; several nephews and a special friend, Dorothy Varner of St. Albans. Shreve graduated from Buckhannon Upshur High School in 1949 and WVU in 1953. Shreve was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist of St. Albans. He was a career employee for the Soil Conservation Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture beginning in 1951 as a student trainee while attending WVU’s School of Agriculture. During his 36 year career with the SCS he headed the field offices at Parkersburg and Keyser, organized the Great Kanawha Resource Conservation and Development area in Ripley, was District Conservationist in Charleston and Assistant State Resource Conservationist in the Morgantown office. During and after his career he enjoyed working with farmers to develop plans for best land use practices. While attending WVU he entered the ROTC program and served two years in the army obtaining the rank of First Lieutenant when he was honorably discharged from Fort Riley, Kansas after two years of service. During his retirement Dixie Shreve continued his passion for working the land by growing many fruits and vegetables and in 1995 he was crowned Strawberry King in The West Virginia Strawberry Festival. Friends will be received Thursday, October 3rd, 2013 from 5-8pm at The Poling-st. Clair funeral in Buckhannon WV. A funeral service will held at 1pm at the funeral home with Reverend Loretta Isaiah officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Rupert Cemetery in Buckhannon. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Mt. Rupert Church C/o Sandy Ireland, Treasurer, 69 Rogers Lane, Buckhannon, WV 26201. Poling-st. Clair funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.
