Mr. Donald Leroy Short, 79, a resident of Belington, formerly of North Carolina, departed this life Monday morning, Jan. 21, 2013. in Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington. He had been in declining health for quite some time.

He was born Oct. 19, 1933. at Fort Devon, Mass., a son of the late John Dewitt and Marion Sleeper Short.

Mr. Short is survived by one brother. Kal Short; and two sisters. Bess Thomas and Faye Rembert. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Paul Short.

Mr. Short attended the schools of North Carolina. Before going into business for himself, Don served his country in the U.S. Navy followed by a stint as a paratrooper with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. After serving his country, he went into the food and beverage business. He created The Red Lion Tavern, The Pump House, Checkered Flag Lounge, and 19th Hole at Cedarwood Golf Course, all in Charlotte, N.C. He also created The Chaparral Club in Asheville, N.C. Don was a Protestant by faith; and he was a kind and generous man.

At the request of the deceased, his remains will be cremated. There will be a private memorial service in North Carolina.
