Donald N. Kelly, 75, a lifelong resident of Elkins born on June 26th, 1946, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 5th. He was a husband, a brother, an uncle, a stepfather, a grandfather, a “Duck” (a nickname created affectionately by his grandson), and a friend to so many.

He was a longtime employee of the West Virginia Department of Highways, and after retirement, worked part time for the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources — he loved working for the state and retired from the WV DNR just last year. He was a proud Vietnam veteran, a member of the American Legion, an avid NASCAR fan, and a lover of the great outdoors — especially his West Virginia hills. He was passionate about preserving the land around him and enjoyed long drives on backroads. You could often find him riding the lawnmower and doing meticulous yard work. Throughout the years, he was known in his family for his delicious homemade hotdog chili and ramp recipes. Whenever someone needed help, whether it was needing rescued from a flat tire or asking for directions, he was always the first to lend a hand. He was an excellent mechanic who loved reading, especially local history books. He could talk for hours to his grandchildren about the places he had been, and loved to show the photos he had taken of West Virginia scenery and wildlife.

He is so loved and will be very missed by his entire family. His wish for cremation will be honored and a memorial will be placed at Brick Church Cemetery in Huttonsville. Details of a Celebration of Life will be shared at a later date.
