Mr. Doyle Richard Carpenter, 92, a resident of Serpell Avenue, Belington, departed this life early Wednesday morning, April 10, 2013, in Hospice Care Regional Impatient Center at Elkins.

He was born July 9, 1920, at French Creek, in Upshur County, a son of the late Roy Melvin and Ella Hunt Carpenter.

On Sept. 13, 1950, he was united in marriage to the former Mildred Virginia Conner, who survives at their home in Belington.

Mr. Carpenter is survived by three sons, Tom Carpenter and wife, Pat, of Alabama, Bob Carpenter and wife, Rhonda, of Georgia, and Dale Carpenter and wife, April, of Georgia. He is also survived by four brothers, Olen Carpenter of West Virginia, Hugh Daniel Carpenter of Ohio, Willard Carpenter of West Virginia, and Hub Carpenter of North Carolina; two sisters, Opal Page of West Virginia, and Dama Jean Stockard of West Virginia; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two infant daughters and one sister, Avis Cowger.

Mr. Carpenter attended the schools of Upshur County. He served in the United States Navy where he earned the rank of chief petty officer. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1975 with the rank of master sergeant, making him a veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Laurel Mountain Post 410 and American Legion Post 96, both of Belington. Upon retiring from the Air Force and returning to Barbour County, he owned and operated a barber shop in Belington.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington Saturday, April 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. and again Sunday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jimmie E. Tallman officiating. Interment will follow in Center Chapel Cemetery at French Creek where full military rites will be accorded.
