Dr. Hugh H. Cook Jr. 2002 Obituary

Dr. Hugh H. Cook Jr., of Jesup, Ga., formerly of Dothan, Ala., and Wilmington, N.C., died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, in the Veterans Hospital in Dublin, Ga., after an extended illness.

He married Pauline “Polly” Cook, who survives in Jesup, Ga.

Also surviving are a son, Commander Hugh H. Cook III, Orange Park, Fla.; a daughter, Hilary C. Rouse, Jacksonville, N.C.; a brother, Max W. Cook, Fairfax, Va.; and four granddaughters, Amanda and Jessica Rouse and Stacy and Kristen Cook.

Dr. Cook was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Jesup, Ga. He was a graduate of Wake Forest College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

He served eight years in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Cook served on the board of directors of Memorial General Hospital in Elkins where he was a member of the staff and was the medical director for many years. He was the head of the obstetrics and gynecology department of the Golden Medical Group and served on the board of directors of the First State Bank in Elkins. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Physician Executives and was a diplomat of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. After retirement from his practice in West Virginia, he worked for the North Carolina Department of Public Health.

Friends were received at Rinehart & Sons Funeral Home of Jesup, Ga. Funeral services were held Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen Grantham officiating. Interment followed in Screven City Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Class of 1952 Scholarship Fund, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Office of Alumni Affairs, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-salem, N.C. 27157-7128.
