Dwight Jefferson “Jeff” Calain, 54, a former resident of Bowden, until he moved to Orlando, Fla., in 1996 and returned in 2000 due to his illness, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Nella’s Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since November 2002.

Death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Nov. 10, 1948, in Harman, a son of Ethel Waldon Calain, who survives in Bowden, and the late Russell H. Calain.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one son, Scott Jefferson Calain of Orlando, Fla.; a special friend, Debra Vanscoy of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Russell W. Calain of Windham, Ohio. Also surviving are several cousins, one niece, Kimberly Ann Calain of Newton Falls, Ohio; one nephew, James William Calain of Windham, Ohio; and one great-nephew, Kobe Lee Calain of Newton Falls, Ohio.

He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1966. He then was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict.

He was honorably discharged and returned to Bowden and enrolled in Davis & Elkins College, where he graduated with a degree in environmental science.

He moved to Orlando, Fla., where he was an electrician, plumber and worked on air conditioners.

eturning to Bowden, he was self-employed as a brick layer, operated jackhammers and was a stone mason, and had several other talents.

He was a well-known person and was always helping other people.

At the request of the deceased the remains will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced at that time.

The F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Dwight Jefferson “Jeff” Calain.
