Edith Virginia Miller Phillips, 98, a resident of Parsons, departed this life early Saturday morning, January 19, 2013, at Colonial Place in Elkins.

She was born on Sunday, Jan. 25, 1914, in Parsons, a daughter of the late Ernest Jesse and Minnie Ellen Shaffer Miller.

On July 24, 1937, she was married to Roy Phillips, who preceded her in death, Aug. 21, 1992, after celebrating 55 years of marriage.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Alice Messer and husband, Jack, Gilman, and Helen Louise Barnhart and husband, Marlin, Hagerstown, Md; two grandsons, David Jack Messer and wife, Michelle, and Robert James Messer; one step-granddaughter, Anita Delauney; and three step-grandchildren, Leah Goss, Quinn Delauney and Charles Jones; also several nieces and nephews.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one son, Rodney Durl Phillips; one sister, Catherine Bennett; one brother, Ralph Miller; and one step- grandson, Edward Barnhart.

She graduated from Parsons High School in 1933. She worked at Dorman Mills before she was married as a weaver. After she married, she moved to Pennsylvania, where she resided for 10 years, before returning to Parsons to raise her children. In 1957, she returned to work at Dorman Mills as a burlier until the mill closed.

She enjoyed working in the garden and canning the produce from the garden.

She also enjoyed cooking for her family and helping the ladies at the church make raisin-filled cookies. She was an avid quilter. She made many quilts and Afghans for members of her family.

She was an active member of the St. Johns United Methodist Church of Parsons and was a Sunday school teacher for years.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home Parsons Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. On Wednesday at the funeral home parlor, a funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Jonas Johnson Jr. will officiate and interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons.
