Elbert C. Whanger 1901-2002 Obituary

Elbert C. Whanger, 101, a resident of Durbin, passed away Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, in Nella’s Nursing Home in Elkins.

Mr. Whanger was born April 28, 1901, at Ronceverte, the son of the late A. Grant and Josie E. Livesay Whanger.

He had been a resident of Durbin since 1924 and was a 75-year member of Riverside Lodge 124 AF & AM.

He was a member of the Liberty Presbyterian Church at Green Bank where he was an elder of the church for over 30 years and was a past clerk of the Session.

He was also treasurer of the Senior Citizens Outpost of Durbin and was a retired agent and operator of the C&O Railroad where he served 51 1/2 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Willa G. Nottingham Whanger, who died Aug. 28, 1991, and by a sister, Ethel W. Long, and a brother, Ernest G. Whanger.

Surviving are two sons, Julian G. Whanger, Richmond, Va., and James David Whanger; a sister, Nellie W. Johnson, Ronceverte; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Liberty Presbyterian Church in Green Bank where funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Doyle Kester will officiate and interment will follow at the Arbovale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the Liberty Presbyterian Church. The Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale is in charge of the arrangements.
