Elizabeth Pollock Daugherty Ramsey 1913-2002 Obituary

Elizabeth Pollock Daugherty Ramsey, 88, of 225 Garnett St., Philippi, died early Sunday morning, June 23, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness.

She was born on Dec. 6, 1913, in Grafton, a daughter of the late George Wellington and Ruth Pollock.

Her devoted husband of 17 years, James Ramsey, survives at home. She was the mother to son, Lee H. “Skip” Daugherty of Charleston; and daughter, Jane Daugherty of Arnold, Md.

Preceding her in death was her first husband, A. Lane Daugherty; and one brother, George Wellington Pollock Jr.

A teacher by profession, Mrs. Ramsey retired after 33 years of teaching. She began her teaching career at Bridgeport High School and retired in 1975 from Philip Barbour High School. A teacher of Latin and English, she was instrumental in the formation of the Junior Classical League of West Virginia, where her students won numerous state and national awards. She loved teaching and in 1960 she was named Barbour County Teacher of the Year. She is also listed in Community Leaders of America, Personalities of the South, Dictionary of International Biography and World Who’s Who of Women.

Professionally, she is a member of WVEA, ACT, National Council of Teachers of English, Classics Association of the Middle-west and South, and is a life member of NEA. She has served as president of the Barbour County Education Association, Barbour County Association of Classroom Teachers, the Mid-state Council of Teachers of English, and the Classics Section of WVEA. She is also a member of Lambda Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma teachers honorary.

She was a charter member of the Philippi Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Philippi PTA.

An active member of Crim United Methodist Church, Mrs. Ramsey has served on the official board, circle leader, Sunday school teacher and dean of Vacation Church School. She was awarded a life membership in the WSCS by the local society.

More recently, Mrs. Ramsey has served as assistant state director of West Virginia AARP, treasurer of the Barbour County Historical Society and as a member of the board of directors for the new Broaddus Hospital in Philippi. In her retirement years, she remained very active as a volunteer for many church and community activities.

A gifted seamstress, Mrs. Ramsey enjoyed traveling with her husband, reading, cats and entertaining friends.

Friends may call at Wright Funeral Home in Philippi from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today or after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. A. Rapking officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
