Estle Winford Phillips 1924-2002 Obituary

Estle Winford Phillips, 78, a resident of Route 2, Midway Road, Philippi, passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 22, 2002, at his residence, following an extended illness. He was under the care of Mountain Hospice.

He was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Barbour County, a son of the late French M. and Etta P. Bartlett Phillips.

He was united in marriage on May 1, 1948, at Parsons, to the former Lucille McDaniel, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry W. and wife, Carolyn Phillips and Jeffrey A. and wife, Joy Phillips, all of Belington; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy L. and husband, Dan Bryant, Philippi; one brother, Troy Phillips, Elkins; one sister, Agatha Schoonover, Belington; one half sister, Ersie Godwin, Akron, Ohio; five grandchildren, Scott Cross, Danny Bryant, Brandy Phillips, J.P. Phillips and Cheryl Hawkins and husband, John; and five great-grandchildren, Courtney Stuart, Trae Phillips, J.W., Caleb and Jedidiah Hawkins.

He was preceded in death by one half brother, Jesse Phillips; and two half sisters, Glenda Row and Kate Davis.

Mr. Phillips was employed by the Barbour County Department of Highways. He retired in 1986 from the Barbour County Board of Education with 23 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II serving as a MP at New Caledonia and the Hawaiian Islands. He was a member of the Corley United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, after 5 p.m. Tuesday. He will be moved at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday to the Corley United Methodist Church to lie in state from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Dale Waters and the Rev. Arden Beck will officiate. Interment will follow in the Barbour Memorial Cemetery with American Legion Post 44 conducting military rites.
