Mr. Eugene E. “Gene” Harris, 91, a resident of the Laurel Mountain Road in Belington, departed this life 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at his residence following a brief illness

He was born Nov. 18, 1921. at Ten Mile community near Belington, a son of the late John Henry and Mary Etta Wolfe Harris.

On Dec. 20, 1945, at Dartmoor, he was united in marriage to the former Katherine Charlotte Trustler who preceded him in death July 10, 2007 after 61 years of marriage.

Mr. Harris is survived by one son, Donald E. Harris and wife, Nancy, of Belington; two daughters, Charlotte Ann Vanscoy and husband, Willard, of Fairmont and Mary Katherine Wright and husband, Burlin, of Parsons. Also surviving are one sister, Alma Ware of Belington; one brother, Herman Harris of Belington; seven grandchildren Tom Harris, Loretta Talbott, Greg Vanscoy, Jennie Lister, Michael Vanscoy, Scott Wright, and Mark Wright; and 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Harris attended the schools of Barbour County and machine trade school in Charleston. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy where he had received the rank of boatman’s mate first class serving in the Atlantic and the Pacific Theatre and the African Invasion. Gene retired from New Era Homes in Belington in 1985 after 25 years of employment. He was a lifelong Barbour County farmer and attended the Faith Deliverance Ministries in Belington and was a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Laurel Mountain Post 410 in Belington.

Friends will be received from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday Jan. 31, from Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington and again Friday from 8 to 11 a.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Terry Hedrick a longtime friend officiating. Interment will follow in Valley Bend Cemetery near Belington where full military rites will be accorded by the U.S. Navy and by American Legion Post 96 of Belington.
