Eulah Dorothy Yount 1905-2002

Eulah Dorothy Simmons Tacy Hanna Yount, 96, a resident of Huttonsville for more than 70 years, departed this life at 3:10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He had been a resident at Nella’s Nursing Home since May of 2002.

She was born March 9, 1906, at Conley Run near Valley Head, a daughter of the late Valentine and Elverda Ware Simmons.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by six brothers, Harvey, Roy, Jesse, Conley, Frank and Bert Simmons; and four sisters, Nola Vandevender, Geneva Snyder, Nina Arbogast and Goldie Wamsley.

She attended the schools of Randolph County and was formerly employed as a cook at Don Bosco in Huttonsville. She also was a “cookie” at her brother-in-law’s, Daris Vandevender, logging camp, where she met her first husband, Walter Tacy. They were married at the home of her late parents, Valentine and Elverda Ware Simmons, in Valley Head. On Feb. 4, 1948, Mr. Taylor was killed on Cheat Mountain while employed for the West Virginia Department of Highways. To this union were born her daughter, Gatewood Carr Godwin of Mill Creek, and two sons, Bill C. Tacy and wife, June, and Frank L. Tacy and wife, Gisela, all of Huttonsville.

On June 7, 1950, she married Julian Anton Hanna of Davis. He departed this life in 1967, leaving her with two stepchildren, the Rev. Julian A. Hanna and Mickey Hanna Johnson.

On Dec. 21, 1969, she was united in marriage to Dr. Glenn O. Yount of Hickory, N.C. He had served a minister of the Mill Creek and Tygart Valley Presbyterian Church for many years. She was survived by her stepchildren: two stepsons, the Rev. James Yount and wife, Betty, of Waynesboro, Va., and Bill Yount and wife, Mary Francis, of Florida; and three stepdaughters, Betty Mae and husband of Connecticut, Mary Francis Yount, and Rena Yount Dyer and husband, John. Dr. Yount departed this life in 1979.

Mrs. Yount is also survived by nine grandchildren, Stephen D. Carr and wife, Mary Rachel, Rodney Carr and wife, Charolette, Mickie Tacy and wife, Susan, Clarence Tacy, Randy Tacy and wife, Carol, Derrick Tacy and wife, Whitney, Dorothy Tacy and husband, David Tyson, Crystal Tacy and husband, Bruce Bolden and Susan Tacy and husband, Jim Miracle.

Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, several stepgreat-grandchildren, stepgreat-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Yount was a member of the Tygart Valley Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Huttonsville Rebekah Lodge, IOOF Lodge, and a past member of the Mill Creek and Huttonsville Extension Homemakers.

She loved everyone and told them so. Mrs. Yount will lie in state at F.E. Runner Funeral Home, who has served all her family in the past. Friends will be received after 6 p.m. Saturday at the Runner chapel. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner chapel Sunday at 3 p.m. Dr. Robert J. Klein, pastor of the Mill Creek Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville.
