Evelyn Virginia Crouch, 92, a former resident of 120 Second St., Elkins, and more recently a resident of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center at Belington, departed this life late Saturday afternoon, June 28, 2003, at the center. She had been in declining health.

She was born Thursday, July 7, 1910, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Lee Crouch and Sarah Amanda Wallace Crouch.

She had never married.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one brother, Wallace McNeel Crouch, and two sisters, Mary Rothlisberger and Maud Morris.

She is survived by her niece, Helen Huston and husband, Bob, of Albion, Pa.; their children, Richard Huston and wife, Sherry, and family of Albion, Robert E. Huston Jr. and wife, Carolyn, and family of Nashville, Tenn., Marcia McCall and husband, Cash, and family of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and nieces, Joanne and Tom Sanders and family of Pennsylvania, and Carol and Chuck Miller and family of South Carolina.

She attended the schools of Elkins, was a graduate of the Elkins High School class of 1927 and was a cum laude graduate of Davis & Elkins College, with the class of 1931.

Following college she taught at the one-room school at Glady. She later attended the University of Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh, Pa., and received a master’s of education degree. In 1953, she obtained a master’s of arts degree at the George Peabody College for Teachers at Nashville. The same year she received her state board certification of librarians.

She served as librarian at West Virginia Wesleyan College at Buckhannon for several years and then became the librarian at Davis & Elkins College, from which she retired.

Evelyn was a devoted member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church where she received an honorary life membership by the Women of the Church in 1978, was a very dedicated member of Circle No. 5 and attended its meetings well into her 80s, and had served as Sunday School teacher for the adult Sunday School class.

The family will receive friends at the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Jeff Falter will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery in Elkins.
