Franklin D. Shaffer, 68, of Thomas died Aug. 5 at Cortland Acres Nursing home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.

He was born March 16, 1933, in Thomas, a son of the late Charles Harrison Shaffer Sr. and Vernie Catherine Elborn Shaffer.

He is survived by a brother and a sister, Charles H. (and Dorothy) Shaffer of Howard City, MI and Aline R. (and Junior) Kovach of Thomas; four half-sisters, Gladys Nazelrod of Clarksburg, Levie Phillips of Front Royal, VA, Ada (and Robert) Lipscomb and Lorena (and Jim) Digman, both of Leadmine.

He was preceded in death by seven half-brothers, seven half-sisters and a number of nieces and nephews.

Hr. Shaffer was a 1950 graduate of Thomas High School and a 1960 graduate of Fairmont State College. He served in the US Navy for four years in the 1950s. He worked for the WV Division of Corrections, Tucker county Board of Education, and Garrett, MD Board of Education. He retired from Huttonsville Correctional Center where he worked in diagnostics and classification. He served on the Mountain Top Senior Citizens Board of Directors, the Thomas volunteer Fire Department, and was an auxiliary member of Tucker community Chorus. He was a Methodist by faith.

Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home, Davis, August 7. Funeral Services will be held at funeral Chapel today, Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Winters officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Thomas.
