Garry E. Harris 1936-2003 Obituary
Garry E. Harris, 66, facing cancer with great faith, passed into eternal rest Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at his home in Kenmore, Ohio, with his soul mate, Sylvia, by his side.
Educated in West Virginia public schools, he later served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, earning the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Medal and Expert Rifleman of the M-16.
A self-taught mechanic, he added to his knowledge by completing the Textron School in Atlanta, Ga. He retired from Mayfair Country Club.
A lover of sports, he watched every game and traveled to Cleveland Indians’ and Browns’ games. He also liked to fish, bowl and boat on Portage Lakes.
He was a member of the Cathedral of Tomorrow and later attended Akron Baptist Temple.
Active in the Christian Children’s Fund and Feed the Children programs, he was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Italian-American Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Civitan Club.
As disabilities prohibited travel, he was a reader of Civil War and World War II history. He enjoyed at his home swimming, the rose, flower and vegetable gardens and found great pleasure with his loved dog, Ranger.
Mr. Harris was born Oct. 1, 1936, in Wyatt, W.Va., to the late Homer and Belle Hickman Harris.
He was preceded in death by sisters Jean McCombs, June Steele and Karen Ann Harris; and brothers Robert, Rexall, Ray, Ross, Randall, Richard and Michael.
Survivors are daughter, Elisabeth Hetterich of Germany, Judy Harris of Elkins, brother Ralph Harris of Shinnston, Sylvia Hamrick of the home in Kenmore, Ohio, sister-in-laws Helen Harris of Fairmont, Dorothy Stalnaker and Kathryn Harris of Shinnston, and Rose Harris of Grafton.
Per Garry’s request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at the convenience of the family.
