George Everett Channell, 79, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Sunday morning, March 16, 2003, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. Death was unexpected and attributed to heart failure.

He was born Nov. 4, 1923, at Shaver’s Fork, a son of the late Robert W. Channell and Martha Cross Channell. On May 16, 1959, at Parsons, he was married to the former Virginia Ruth Nine, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, George Jacob Channell and wife, Agnes, of Montrose, and David Allen Channell, Parsons; one daughter, Martha “Becky” Lipscomb and husband, William Donald, Thomas; four grandchildren, Christopher, Andrew and April Caldwell and Adam Channell; one great-granddaughter, Tiffanie Caldwell; and his special friend, Babe.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by six brothers, Orland, Hayward, Eddie, Freddie, Robert and Richard; and one sister, Sarah Ellen Everly.

He attended the one-room school at Shaver’s Fork and served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He was a farmer, an employee of the former Parsons Tannery for 23 years until its closing, and an employee of the former Parsons Shoe Plant for 22 years.

He was also a member of the American Legion Post 71, Oakland, Md. The family will receive friends at the Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Wednesday at 2 p.m.

The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate and interment will follow at Parsons Family Cemetery at Shaver’s Fork.

The Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for George Everett Channell.
