Gilbert Strawder 1913-2002 Obituary

Gilbert Strawder, 89, a resident of the Rowes Court, Elkins, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 23, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital. He had been in his usual health and death was sudden and unexpected and due to cardiac arrest.

He was born Thursday, Sept. 18, 1913, at Pendleton County, a son of the late Ora C. Strawder and Roberta Arbogast Strawder.

On Feb. 7, 1944, he was married to the former Kathleen Cochran, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Robert Strawder and wife, Bonnie, Elkins, Marshall Strawder and wife, Tina, Parsons, and Allan Strawder, Carson City, Nev.; three daughters, Grace White and husband, Roy, Elkins, Sue Shifflett and husband, Wes, Junior, and JoAnn Walker and husband, Chuck, Houston, Texas; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by five brothers, Cecil, Delbert, Delmer, Elmer and Ora Strawder.

He attended the schools of Glady, had worked for the Western Maryland Railroad at Glady, the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Commodity Warehouse, had worked as janitor for the Elkins-randolph County Emergency Squad and was a bus driver for Randolph County Schools, retiring in 1960. He was a member of the Gospel Light Tabernacle.

Friends will be received at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Sunday at 2 p.m. The Rev. A.H. Belt will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
