Gorman Cecil Summerfield, 80, a resident of Parsons and a former resident of Pifer Mountain, St. George, departed this life Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to a stroke.

He was born May 24, 1921, at Leadmine, a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Summerfield and Jamima Likens Summerfield.

On May 13, 1946, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Sylvia A. Godwin, who survives. They had celebrated 55 years of marriage.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert Cecil Summerfield and wife, Clara, and James Richard Summerfield and wife, Sandy, all of Parsons; two daughters, Wanda Jean Summerfield, Parsons, and Linda Jane Crosten, Elkins; one sister, Edna Bohon, a resident of Cortland Acres at Thomas; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth Lee Summerfield and William F. “Bill” Summerfield; one brother, Raymond Summerfield; two sisters, Hulda Whitehair and Golda Summerfield; and one half sister, Gertrude Biller.

He attended the one-room school at Leadmine. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the American Theater and Asiatic-pacific Theater, receiving the victory medal. He was a farmer and woodsman. He was a buffer for the Sterling-faucet Co. at Morgantown. He had worked for the former Dorman Mills as a mechanic and retired in 1983 as a mechanic for the Tucker County Board of Education at the school bus garage with 15 years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter.

He attended the Pentecostal Church at Rosendorf.

Friends will be received at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Saturday at 1 p.m. Pastor Floyd Carr and Pastor James Ellis will officiate and interment will follow at Pifer Mountain Cemetery at St. George, where the presentation of the American flag will be presented by the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion
