GREGORY PAUL ROY, age 54 years, a resident of Parsons, WV, departed this life early Tuesday morning, June 11, 2013 at his home surrounded by loving family. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.

He was born Saturday, February 27, 1959 at Nouasseur Air Force Base, French Morocco to the late Paul L. Roy and Velma V. Roy, who survives at Parsons, WV.

Also surviving are two sisters, Risha McGill and husband Randall of Point Pleasant, WV and Michelle Phillips and husband Allan of Ranson, WV; two nieces, Arysta Brick and husband Jason of Dobson, NC and Reanna Phillips of Charleston, WV; two nephews, Jeremy McGill and wife Elaine of Buckhannon, WV and Jon Phillips of Ranson, WV; three great nieces, Kyia and Emma McGill of Buckhannon, WV and Norah Brick of Dobson, NC; one great nephew, Eric McGill of Buckhannon, WV; and several aunts, uncles and numerous cousins. He was married briefly to the former Patsy Hershman.

His early school years were spent in schools in several states from Maine to Florida due to his Father’s military service. He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the Class of 1977. While in Tucker County, he worked at the Kingsford Charcoal Plant and the former Parsons Footwear Company. After several moves, he settled in Winchester, VA working for The Shockey Companies from 1987 until 2007, when his battle with cancer necessitated leaving the job he so valued and camaraderie of fellow workers he so enjoyed.

His work ethic was strong. He was a good neighbor often considering the needs of many in the community and providing assistance when and where possible even throughout his battle with cancer. Interests included camping, driving around searching out new roads in Tucker and nearby counties, Nascar racing and his super driver was Dale Earnhardt, and of course, cheering for the Mountaineers as well as the Tucker County Mountain Lions. He often worked puzzles, regardless the level of difficulty and word puzzles to keep his mind active and combat the effects of chemotherapy. His laughter was strong and contagious.

In 2006, he was diagnosed with cancer and through the years fought valiantly to live his life as fully as possible. By God’s grace he was granted many years longer than expected and he acknowledged that grace by accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Thursday from 5 to 8 PM. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 1 PM. The Rev. Larry Filler will officiate and interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, WV. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Leukemia/lymphoma Society or the Parsons High School Alumni Assoc., PO Box 51, Parsons, WV 26287.
