Harry Elvin Simmons 1911-2002 Obituary

Harry Elvin Simmons, 90, of Thomas, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home.

He was born Oct. 7, 1911, in Lanesville, a son of the late Edward Faye and Chloe Bodkin Simmons.

He is survived by three sons, Melvin H. Simmons, Ashburn, Va., Jack L. Simmons, Oakland, Md., and R. Keith Simmons of Morgantown; one stepdaughter, Wilda Jackson, Red Creek; three brothers, Herb Simmons, Davis, Richard Simmons, Baltimore, Md., and Hoye Simmons, Harman; three sisters, Helen Jacobs, York, Pa., Twila Wolford, Dry Fork, and Argyle Shanks, Harrisonburg, Va.; nine grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary E. Bonner in 1972; and his second wife, Hazel Mallow in 1987.

Mr. Simmons was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired equipment operator for the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was a member of the VFW Post 5781 of Harman and was affiliated with Flanagan Hill Church.

Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Winter officiating. Interment will follow at Flanagan Hill Cemetery.
