Harry G. Bennett, 76, a resident of Route 2, Elkins, the Highland Park Community, passed away Thursday evening, July 11, 2002.

He was born Jan. 31, 1926, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Ulysses Grant and Annie Cecil Ours Bennett.

On March 22, 1958, in Oakland, Md., he was married to Lorraina Jewell Bennett, who preceded him in death on Sept. 9, 1995.

He is survived by four sons, Ernest Bennett, Los Alamos, N.M., Harry Bennett Jr. and Ronald Bennett, both of Elkins, and Donald Bennett of Elk City, Okla.; one daughter, Diane Bennett Channell of Midland, Texas; five brothers, Charles “Joe” Bennett, Olympia, Wash., Carroll “Bill” Bennett and David Bennett, both of Elkins, Jerry Bennett, Winesburg, Ohio, and Grant Bennett Jr. of Barberton, Ohio; four sisters, May White, Ruth McCoy and Jean Weese, all of Elkins, and Marie Miles of Grayson, Ky.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Harold, Paul and Jessie Bennett; one sister, Irene Haddix; one son-in-law, Samuel Channell; and a grandson, Michael Channell.

Mr. Bennett attended the schools of Upshur County and served in Company C 285th Engineers Combat Battalion of the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

He was employed as a carmen and welder for the Western Maryland Railroad and the Chessie System Railroad, prior to his retirement. He was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion and former attended the Church of God.

Friends may call from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Eli Hostetler officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. State Memorial Gardens near Gilman, where full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite by members of the H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
