Herbert Golden Wilfong, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, after a battle with cancer.

He was surrounded by his loving family lead by his wife of 58 years, Shirley.

He was born June 22, 1921, one of 12 children, to Charles and Addie Reed Wilfong in Buckhannon.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army transferring to the Air Force and was a belly gunnar on a B-17 during World War II. He met and married Shirley Mae Lucas while stationed at Truax Field in Madison, Wisc. After the war he returned to Madison raising a family, working for Pet Milk Company and Coyle Carpeting. He and Shirley moved to Colorado Springs in 1972 to open and manage a new Coyle Carpet Store.

After his retirement he enjoyed his family, playing golf, fishing and he took great pride in his garden.

Survivors in addition to his wife are one son, Richard, and wife, Donna Wilfong; and four daughters, Becky and husband, Temple, Jerri and husband Robert Brooks, Linda Garcarski and Billie Jean and husband, Robert Pierstorff.

He was preceded in death by one son, Herbert James “Jim” Wilfong; one sister, Clara Hibbs; one sister-in-law, Peg Wilfong; one brother-in-law, Ozzol Smith; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

A private service was held at Swan Law Funeral Directors for family members. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, 825 E. Pikes Peak Ave., Suite 600, Colorado Springs, Colo. 80903.
