Herbert H. Browning, 63, of 640 Glenmore Loop Road, Elkins, passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, in the Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department.

He had been in declining health since 1991.

He was born Feb. 29, 1940, in Belington, the son of the late George G. and Alberta Weese Browning.

On Dec. 1, 1960, he was married to Gilda Lea Primavero Browning, who survives in Elkins.

Also surviving are two sons, Herbert H. Browning Jr. and George “Michael” Browning, both of Elkins; two daughters, Phyllis J. Wood of Ripley and Mary Elizabeth Burrows of Beverly; one half brother, Marshall Browning of Belington; one stepbrother, Randy Bennett of Gettysburg, Pa.; two sisters, Beulah Jean Griffith of Lorain, Ohio, and Shirley Blosser of Parsons; one stepsister, Betty Sleeth of Ohio; and five grandchildren, Justin Wood of Sand Ridge, Joseph, Matthew and Joshua Browning, all of Elkins, Ashley Burrows of Beverly and Kevin Wood of Weston.

Also preceding him in death were his stepmother, Beatrice Taylor Browning; one sister, Carolyn Sue; and a stepbrother, Bill Bennett.

Mr. Browning was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic for 92 Coal Co. prior to his retirement.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Randall Richards officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.

The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Herbert H. Browning.
