HOWARD DALE MOORE, age 76 years, a resident of Parsons, WV, and a well known educator, departed this life Sunday morning, June 19, 2011 at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center at Elkins.

He was born Wednesday, June 13, 1935 at Clover Run, Tucker Co., WV, a son of the late Howard Emory Moore and Eva Eliza Crosten Moore.

On June 4, 1960 at Baltimore, MD, he was married to the former Linda L. Hurley, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Gregory Hunter Moore and wife Mary Beth of Clarksburg, WV; three daughters, Desirre Lea Guire and husband James of Elkins, Eve-anne Moore of Morgantown, WV, Candace Brooke deCourten and husband Nicolas of Lexington, KY; two brothers, Donald Keith Moore and wife Annabell and Ronald Allen Moore, Sr. and wife Naomi, all of Parsons; two sisters, Vera Hilliard and husband Millard of St. Louis, MO, Barbara Gail McDonald and husband Jack of Holly Meadows, WV; five grandchildren, Victoria, Caitlin, Hunter, Andrew and Lauren.

Preceding him in death are two brothers, Frank and Ralph Moore and one sister, Vonda Rose Moore.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1954, where he was a member of the football and basketball teams.

He was President of the National Honor Society and Vice Pres. of his Senior Class. He also volunteered extensively with the National Forest Service by fighting forest fires while in school.

He worked with Western Electric helping to construct the first trans-pacific telephone cables in Baltimore, MD.

He attended Catonsville Community College at Baltimore, MD, where he earned an Associate of Arts degree in general studies and also played on the basketball team.

His work on the Catonsville team won him a scholarship to play basketball at Davis & Elkins College, Elkins, WV, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, with a major in Physical Education and minors in History, English and Social Studies.

He taught at Parsons High School from 1966 until the school closed in 1978. While at PHS, “Coach” taught social studies, economics, health and physical education.

He served as the junior high basketball coach, assist. football coach and as the first girls basketball coach of the school.

During this time he also attended West Virginia University, obtaining a Masters of Arts degree in Educational Administration.

He served as assistant principal at PHS for one year without pay due to the illness of that principal.

He was named principal of Tucker Co. High School in 1978 when the school opened, and served in that capacity (with the exception of one year with Randolph Co. Schools) until he retired from the Tucker County School system in 1995.

Dale was a member of several professional and community organizations, including the National Assoc. of Secondary School Principals, the West Virginia Assoc. of Secondary School Principals and the West Virginia Secondary Schools Athletics Commission.

He served on multiple accreditation teams with the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and worked extensively with the West Virginia Dept. of Education through the Office of Educational Performance Audits inspecting school systems throughout the state of WV.

Dale also was instrumental within the state department of education in the creation of the Special Education Advisory Council.

He worked with the restoration teams in rehabilitating the Parsons Depot.

He has served as a judge for many social studies fairs since his retirement and has served as a member of the Tucker Co. Bd. of Education, sharing his expertise of the educational system with the citizens of Tucker Co.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM.

The casket will remain closed.

On Wednesday evening, June 22, 2011 at 7 PM, a celebration of Mr. Moore’s life will be celebrated with The Rev. Dick Gadd and cremation will follow.

Interment will follow at a later date at the Crosten Cemetery at Clover Run, WV.

The family suggest that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Tucker Co. Board of Education, Attn; Bricks to Bleachers, 501 Chestnut Street, Parsons, WV. 26287.
