Ida Ernestine “Jackie” Baxter, 81, a resident of 524 Center St., Elkins, departed this life Sunday evening, Nov. 23, 2003, at her home. She had been in declining health although death was unexpected.

She was born Monday, April 3, 1922, at Frank, the daughter of the late Mozell Thompson and Lillie Jane Jones Thompson.

On Oct. 15, 1945, at Monterey, Va., she was married to Charles Donald Baxter, who preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 1970.

Surviving are one aunt, Annabell Tibbs of Elkins; two nieces, Debbie Johnson of Kansas City, Mo., and Scottie Baxter of New York; two nephews, Michael Waller, U.S. Navy, retired, of Martinsburg and Daniel Sturkey and wife, Sonnetta, of Columbus, Ohio.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband are one brother, Nathan Waller; and one sister, Louise Dunn.

Jackie was a graduate of Riverside High School of Elkins and the Davis Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at Davis Memorial Hospital for 15 years and retired due to two heart attacks.

She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, was a member and secretary of the Son’s and Daughter’s Club of the church, was a member of the church’s board of trustees and was a member of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center Board of Directors.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Terry Cannon will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.
