Irene G. Kerens Harris, 85, a former resident of 210 John St., and then Ferndale Drive, Elkins, and more recently a resident of 1211 Marlboro Road, Stephens City, Va., departed this life Wednesday evening, July 30, 2003, at her residence. She had been in declining health for the past three months.

She was born Tuesday, Sept. 25, 1917, at Randolph County, the daughter of the late Clyde E. Kerens and Effie E. Harper Kerens.

On May 28, 1937, at Oakland, Md., she was married to Raymond F. Harris, who preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1990.

Surviving are two daughters, JoEllen Huey and husband, James, Stephens City, Va., and Bonnie R. Batdorf and husband, Jack, Elkins; four grandchildren, Debi Ramey and husband, Bill, Cyndie Layman and husband, Roger, and Mitz Ryder and husband, Mike, all of Stephens City, Va., and Beth Ray Corley and husband, Keith, Elkins; and seven great-grandchildren, Zach and Josh Layman, Megan and Katelyn Ryder, Kayla Ramey, Helen Michael and husband, Joe, all of Stephens City, Va., and Alexa Corley, Elkins.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two brothers, Owen D. and Emmitt H. Kerens.

She attended the schools of Kerens and was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1935. Irene and Ray owned and operated Harris’ Restaurant during the 1950s. She had worked for Andrews’ Jewelers and was the co-owner of Tyre’s Shoe Store until her retirement in 1973. She enjoyed needlework, sewing and working with flowers and her greatest love was her family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home. Final rites will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Dr. Ellis E. Conley will officiate and interment will follow at Elkins Memorial Gardens, formerly the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, at Elkins.
