Iva Mae Weese Thayer, a former Elkins resident, was born May 12, 1917, in Gassaway. She was a longtime resident of Elkins before moving to Casa Grande, Ariz., in 1970. She has resided at the Parkwood Retirement Community in Bedford, Texas, from 1997 until the time of her death on Monday, March 24, 2003.

After receiving public education in Elkins schools, Mae entered the Women’s Army Corps in 1943, where she was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas, during World War II, and attained the rank of corporal. After discharge from military service in 1945, she attended Davenport Business College in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Mae was an employee of Citizens National Bank in Elkins for many years and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was always active in her church and community affairs wherever she lived.

At the time she entered into everlasting life, she was a member of the first United Methodist Church in Grapevine, Texas.

Mae will be sadly missed by her loving family and all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, W.D. and Maggie Belle Weese; brothers, Clyde Weese, George Weese and Fred Weese; her husband, Richard S. Thayer; a half brother and half sister, Calvin Ray and Loretta Stickney.

Surviving family members are sister, Bessie Moore of Bedford, Texas; sister, Jessie Mossman and brother-in-law, Allen Mossman, of Grapevine, Texas; brother, L. Bert Weese of Lansing, Mich.; sister-in-law, Mabel Weese of Elkins; nephews, Dewayne Weese of Elkins, James Weese of Lansing, Mich., G.A. “Jay” Mossman III of Newton Square, Pa.; nieces, Janette Weese Poling of Havilovk, N.C., Judy Weese Schuh of Lake Dallas, Texas, Cynthia Mossman of Grapevine, Texas, Bettie Joe Crutchley of Jefferson, Md., and Patricia Glass of Florence, S.C.

Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home on Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Elkins Memorial Gardens, formerly the IOOF Cemetery. Retired United Methodist Minister the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate. Interment will follow. The H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion will make the presentation of the American flag. The F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Iva Mae Weese Thayer. From 29 Mar 2003.
