Joy Diane Cosner Burnside, 56, a former resident of the Glenmore community, Elkins, and more recently a resident of Montrose, departed this life Friday afternoon, Aug. 22, 2003, at her home.

She had been in declining health for the past six months and death was attributed to cancer.

She was born Saturday, May 24, 1947, in Elkins, the daughter of the late Mildred Sue Cosner.

She was reared by her grandparents, the late Luther “Jake” Cosner and Elda Mae Phares Cosner.

On Jan. 15, 1966, at Hot Springs, Va., she was married to William “David” Burnside, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Michael David “Mike” Burnside of Upper Haddix, and Charles Edward “Ed” Burnside and wife, Lori, of Montrose; one daughter, Debra Ann Senese and husband, Dominick, of New Jersey; four brothers, Gary E. Shifflett and wife, Sandra, of Elkins, Douglas K. Shifflett of Canaan Valley, Luther Allen Cosner and wife, Lynda, of Elkins and Harold L. “Bud” Cosner of Elkins; one sister, Janet Kerens and husband, Rich, of Struthers, Ohio; and four grandchildren, twins Alyssa and Erin, and Zack and Koti Burnside, all of Montrose.

Diane was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1965 and had worked for the former Seneca Trail Restaurant in Elkins for many years.

She worked as an assistant to Dr. Ramon Morales, Dr. Sam Roberts and Dr. Frank Mams.

She was an active member of the Elkins Church of the Brethren, served as a secretary for the church board, was the treasurer for Camp Hope at Belington for many years, was a former den mother for the Cub Scouts, was a noted cook and loved to travel.

Friends will be received at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.

On Tuesday, Mrs. Burnside will be moved to the Elkins Church of the Brethren where final rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Pastor Larry Poling and the Rev. Walter H. Blough will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.

The family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Mongold Project, Love and Action Fund, in care of Nancy Thompson, Route 1, Box 174E, Elkins, W.Va. 26241.
