Jacob Brooks Godwin, 83, a resident of the Kerens Community, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at 3:26 p.m. at his residence. He had been in failing health; however, death was sudden and unexpected.

He was born Sept. 6, 1919, at Fairmont, a son of the late Joseph and Ina Nestor Godwin.

On Jan. 21, 1986, he was united in marriage to the former Martha Ann Ware, who survives at Kerens.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce Pritt and husband, Bob, of the Cravensdale Community; one stepdaughter, Martha Wood and husband, John, of Kerens; three sons, Carl J. Godwin of Norton, Mark Godwin and Jake Godwin, both of Kerens; four sisters, Mae Streets of Thomas, Sylvia Summerfield of Parsons, Edith Nestor of Montrose, and Dolly Summerfield of Parsons; one brother, Dennis Godwin of St. George; one grandson, Michael Pritt; and several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding him in death was a sister, Ruth Bohon; and one half brother, Alva Shahan.

Mr. Godwin was last employed for Bob Phillips as a mobile home mover until retiring in the 1980s. He was formerly employed in the shipyards in Baltimore, Md. and had also been a coal miner. Several years ago he worked for Montgomery Ward’s as a carpenter. He loved to spend time going to auctions and was a Protestant by faith.

Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel Sunday after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner chapel Monday at 2 p.m. The Rev. A.H. Belt, pastor of the Gospel Light Tabernacle will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
