James F. Lawson, 74, a resident of Route 4, Philippi, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, in Broaddus Hospital.

He was born Aug. 23, 1927, at Philippi, a son of the late Ralph and Ethel Clark Lawson.

He was united in marriage on Nov. 26, 1948, to the former Barbara A. Sparks, who preceded him in death on May 16, 1999.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Michael Lewis, Mineral Wells; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey M. and Debbie Lawson, Fresno, Calif.; one half brother, Eddie Stevens, Inwood; four grandchildren, Joshua Farris, Lisa Farris, Morehead Lawson and Jonathan Lawson.

Mr. Lawson was employed as a clerk and served in various capacities at the Philippi Hardware for 46 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Trouts Unlimited and a member of the Wood Carving Artist Colony. He displayed his wood carvings at the Augusta Heritage Festival. He was a United Methodist by faith.

In honor of Mr. Lawson’s request his body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, with the Rev. Dr. Daniel Unger officiating. A fellowship following the service will be held at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
