James Kenny “Jim” Hartman, age 76 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Friday afternoon, July 23, 2021 at the Davis Medical Center at Elkins, WV with his loving wife at his side. Death was attributed to cardiac arrest.
He was born Monday, April 30, 1945 at Elkins, WV a son of the late Clyde “Shorty” and Forrest C. Davis Hartman. On December 20, 1974 at Sissonville, WV he was married to the former Corrine A. Jackson, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, James K. Hartman, Jr. of LA, Bradley Hartman and wife Sandra of TX; one daughter, Cherie A. Howell and husband Joe of Beckley; four grandchildren, Lea and Aliana Hartman of TX, and Kiana Hartman and Blaine Bishop of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.
He is the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death are one brother, Clyde A. Hartman; and three sisters, Gertrude Chenoweth, Mary Durrett, and Clydetta Heath.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1964. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and later joined the 130th Airlift Squadron of the WV Air National Guard in 1977 until his retirement in 2005 with thirty years of service. He worked at the Huttonsville Correctional Center with over twenty-seven years of service.
Jim had traveled the world with the National Guard and especially enjoyed the time he spent in Hawaii. He loved to paint, was very creative and could work on almost anything. He played Bass and sang in his own band and had played with many big name country music artists. He taught line dancing and alongside his wife was a DJ and had their own Karaoke Business. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins. Jim never met a stranger and could carry a conversation with anyone. He was country when country wasn’t cool. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved his family.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 6 PM, Tuesday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at 11 AM. The Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, WV where full Military Honors will be accorded by members of the WV Air National Guard of Charleston, WV.
